Up in the air Up in the sky Who knows That’s just the way it goes Up in the air Up in the sky Who knows That’s the way it goes A collision course on the fly Up in the air who knows Up in the air up in the sky A collision course of captains fly That’s always the way it goes

If the kids want action tonight then they’ll get it If they want revolution, they’ll have it by morning The world is theirs ‘cause we don’t want it anymore (Yes, I know) If they see brass rings, they better grab ‘em Grab the all. Grab them all Don’t grab nothing. Grab them all. Grab ‘em before you fall. The kids want justice, they want the truth They don’t want lies, they want the proof The world is ours cause they don’t want it anymore (Yes, I know) If they see something they gotta do They’ll do it all, do it all They won’t do nothin’, they’ll do it all But we did it before you all They’re suspect We reject Their defects They try to sell us new truth but the truth never changes They’re suspect We reject Their defects They try to sell us new truth but the truth never changes x2

Don’t take sides There are no sides here Don’t run and hide No place to hide here We got one more lesson to learn And we got one more We got one more to burn It was summertime We lived outside In the rain If it rained We got one more lesson to learn And we got one more We got one more to burn We got one more lesson to learn And we got one more We got one more to burn One more to burn Everytime I think it’s no concern One more to burn One more to burn Everytime I think we’ll never learn One more to burn It was winter time We lived inside We didn’t complain We did not complain

Honestly 05:51
I don’t know why you won’t look me in the eye Honestly, it just kills me I don’t know why you won’t lay down and die Honestly, it would thrill me I don’t know when we can ever do this again Honestly, it just kills me I don’t know how, when the best time is now Honestly, it just kills me
5.
What’s that you’re saying? Is that a come on? You got a funny feeling It’s just your head reeling And it’s gonna reel for awhile ‘Cause there’s gonna be changes ‘Cause life rearranges What’s that you’re saying? Is this a put on? You gotta funny attitude I’m not being rude But I’m gonna be gone for awhile ‘Cause there’s gonna be changes ‘Cause life rearranges from time to time (bridge) What’s that you said? Is that a put down? Is that just booze talking? Hear my boots walking And they’re gonna walk for awhile And there’s gonna be changes ‘Cause life rearranges from to to time

Excitment! 03:42
You want excitement You want to stay out all night every night You want to creep around town while I’m sleeping tight Well that’s alright But how you gonna live How you gonna live when you got nothing left to give How you gonna live when your money’s always spent How you gonna live? How you gonna know How you gonna know when your feeling are not true How you gonna know when you don’t know what to do How you gonna know How you gonna feel when the nights drag on and the days drag Yeah, how you gonna feel when the time comes on and the years drag on How you gonna feel Your time and your money’s alway spent You don’t know what to do and you don’t know where they went When the truth is now unfolding right before your eyes And fate steps in to fuck you up that’s no surprise You know what time it is

Something disconnected and I think Some wires got crossed And I know that we can’t get reconnected ‘Cause the signals still lost Connectivity is all relative to the relativity pertaining to the eletricity, subject to much complexity in proximity to bad chemistry and the necessity of flexibilty, elasticity, hysterically, emphatically, honestly it’s all greek to me, really, honestly, you can even quote me, if need be. There’s a charge for this charge There’s a price for dischage There’s a charge for this charge The price to pay Something disconnected and I think Some wires got crossed And I know that we can’t get reconnected ‘Cause the signals still lost

We run this city We run this town We don’t like you coming in and messing around Trying to keep our people down Down on the boulevard People everywhere I heard it on my radio I ain’t never goin’ back there Back to the square I heard it on my radio I ain’t never goin’ back there Back to square one We run this city We run this town We don’t like you comin’ in Messin’ around Tryin’ to keep our people down Out there on the street People’s gettin’ tight See those kids on the corner, man, they’re feelin’ all right But that’s just tonight Let’s pull up to the corner there, let’s feel all right Just for tonight

Dust in the air Please be aware The more you sink the less you float I don’t know, but I’ve been told These captain’s wing are made of gold That’s what I’ve been told I don’t mind. I’ll get there in time You can keep the roses, I’ll take the wine I don’t know, but I’ve been told The only thing that’s changed me is rock and roll The only thing that saves me is rock and roll Dust in the air Please be aware The more we sink the less we float I don’t know , but I’ve been told No one wants to die before they get old No one wants to die before they get old Never wanted to die before I get old

I could really use the money I could really use the friends Sometimes it feels like a bolt of lightning’s gonna come down and strike me in the end I could really use the time I could really lose my mind Sometimes it feels like a big old hole’s gonna open, up swallow me down and I’ll leave you all behind. I feel like wasting all night, but I just don’t know I feel like, lately, always I gotta let you go

about

The Softies kept this particular line-up together to record their second full-length, but just barely as drummer Dave Potter would fly the coop within a week after recording the basic tracks. (At least he waited until his drum parts were finished.) Recorded in Logan Square at Kayfabe Studios, again with Kris Poulin at the helm.

ILLINOIS ENTERTAINER
Unless I am remembering incorrectly, there was a time ('78 or '79 maybe?) when major labels started placing full-page ads in music magazines that featured both their mainstream acts (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, perhaps) and newer punk or new wave bands (like The Clash, and, yes I know they weren't on the same label) Listening to this Soft Targets CD reminded me of these ads and that era in music. Punk and Classic rock existed as separate entities, but there was an overriding feeling that was created by the mixture of genres. There are some sonic traces of both cited bands on Soft Targets Must Be Destroyed, but it is the manifestation of the spirit of the late 70s/early 80s that makes this record an exciting modern document.—Max Herman

DEMO MAGAZINE
When we reviewed Soft Targets’ 2007 release, We Hate You Soft Targets, we wrote the band was “simple, straightforward pop-rock.” Soft Targets Must Be Destroyed! is similarly rife with dynamic chord progressions, syncopation, and, in some songs, a wall of sound. One major difference from the band’s last record is the production of the recording—Destroyed sounds fuller and more professional. The album’s best song is “Gotta Let You Go,” a sentimental piece whose universal subject matter should strike a chord with anyone who’s ever really cared about somebody else.—Brent White
